Tree Service in Venice, Los Angeles
Need tree work in Venice? Call 310-455-8250 and we will connect you with a licensed, insured tree service for trimming, removal, palm work, stump grinding or storm damage. Venice is part of the City of Los Angeles, just south of Santa Monica, and the street tree in front of your home belongs to the city, so some jobs need a permit before anyone climbs.
City of Los Angeles
Tree Care in Venice
Venice voted to join the City of Los Angeles in 1925. It sits on Santa Monica's southern edge, so Los Angeles rules apply here, not Santa Monica's.
Most of Los Angeles's tall skyline palms are Mexican fan palms. For palms on your own property, see palm tree trimming. On private property, the city also protects several native trees and shrubs, such as native oaks and western sycamore, and removing one needs a permit from the city's Urban Forestry Division.
Nearby, see Brentwood, under the same City of Los Angeles tree rules. Or see all the areas we serve.

Street trees
Street Trees in Venice: What Needs a Permit
StreetsLA's Urban Forestry Division looks after more than 660,000 street trees across Los Angeles, including the parkway tree outside your home. What that means for a homeowner:
- Pruning: pruning a street tree requires a permit from the Urban Forestry Division, and the work must meet the city's pruning standards, including ANSI A300.
- Roots: owners can root-prune a parkway tree at their own cost under a no-fee permit.
- Removal: the city does not allow removal unless the tree is dead or cannot be made safe, apart from listed exceptions such as some sidewalk, sewer and driveway work. Requests go through the StreetsLA online portal, and removing 3 or more trees goes to the Board of Public Works.
- Replacement: under Board of Public Works policy, each street tree removed is replaced with two 24-inch box trees, watered for at least three years.
- Planting: a new street tree needs a no-fee planting permit, must be at least 15-gallon, and the planter maintains it for five years.
The city advises hiring a contractor with a state C61/C49 license for street tree work. If a street tree has fallen or is falling, report it through MyLA311 as a tree emergency.

Walk streets, canals and the coast
Working Around Venice's Walk Streets and Canals
Venice has its own planning rules. The Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan defines walk streets as public streets used by pedestrians and landscaped across the rest of their width. Within a walk street's right-of-way, it says:
- Shrubs and hedges can be no taller than 42 inches.
- Tree canopies must be kept at least 8 feet above grade.
The Venice Canal Historic District, roughly bounded by the Grand, Carroll, Eastern and Sherman canals, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Venice also has its own Coastal Zone, which generally reaches 1,000 yards inland from the high tide line. Small lots, walk streets and canal-side yards often mean no truck access, so describe the access when you call.
